Overview

What does it take to become an effective math coach? Coaching is a complex endeavor that blends a myriad of concepts and skills. In addition to practical experience, there are certain types of knowledge that are important to consider when becoming an effective math coach.

This series of blogs is intended to help you identify what specific content and coaching knowledge is needed to become an effective math coach. It is meant as a resource for math coaches and other stakeholders who are interested in helping teachers instruct in mathematics in ways that are meaningful to students.

We first explain what kind of content knowledge is needed to teach mathematics and how this knowledge is related to coaching. We then show examples of how content and coaching knowledge intersect in ways that benefit teachers and their students. Finally, we go over other critical considerations that help support effective math coaches.
