Mississippi English Learner Proficiency Standards Alignment Peer Review Support

Why?

The Mississippi Department of Education understands the importance of ensuring the alignment of state academic standards and English language proficiency standards so that English learners are ensured access to a curriculum that is on grade level and supports their English language development in the four domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

What?

To support the completion of ESSA assessment peer review requirements, the Region 7 Comprehensive Center, in partnership with the Center for Applied Linguistics, will assist the Mississippi Department of Education in conducting an alignment study of the MS English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards to the MS College- and Career-Readiness Standards for each required content area (ELA, Math, and Science).

Results

The Mississippi Department of Education will gain an understanding of the standards alignment process and methodology by co-facilitating the standards alignment process for the ELPA-21 standards to the state’s ELA, Math, and Science academic standards with the support of the comprehensive center. The work will culminate with a state report on the alignment study that will be submitted to the US Department of Education.
