A Kindergarten Teacher’s Guide to Supporting Family Involvement in Foundational Reading Skills

This guide was created by the Southeast Regional Educational Laboratory for kindergarten teachers to use with parents and caregivers to support them in reinforcing foundational reading skills development at home. It presents four research-based recommendations with how-to steps using family-friendly language to support student skill practice. The guide includes scheduled recommendations for teachers to present information to parents, videos of parental support in action, and teacher-parent conference supports. It contains explicit family literacy routines with support materials such as illustrated reading texts, bookmarks with routine checklists, and a sample family literacy night calendar. Numerous hands-on games and activities are provided for parents to prepare and use at home. This guide is a companion for teacher and administer use with the resource titled Foundational Skills to Support Reading for Understanding in Kindergarten Through 3rd Grade, produced by What Works Clearinghouse.
