This study provides descriptive information on recruitment and retention of teachers or educators from diverse backgrounds. The paper provides an overview of the issues along with a discussion of barriers to recruiting and retaining teachers as well as policy levers used to overcome these barriers. The report is divided into three sections: (a) a review of the current state of affairs in the workforce demographics of teachers of color and the value of a diverse teacher workforce; (b) a discussion on recruiting and retaining teachers of color with a lens on teacher preparation program enrollment and success as well as a review of policies and other social factors that affect teacher recruitment and retention efforts; and (c) a review of best practices to address the barriers associated with recruiting and retaining teachers/educators of color.
