Early Childhood Math Questioning Strategies

This video demonstrates how Recommendation 4 of the Institute of Sciences practice guide Teaching Math to Young Learners can be carried out. The recommendation teach children to view and describe their world mathematically is described by math expert, Douglas Clements of the Marsico Institute for Early Learning and Literacy. Four strategies shared in the video to carry out the recommendation are:

  1. Encourage children to use informal methods to represent math concepts, processes, and solutions;
  2. Help children link formal math vocabulary, symbols, and procedures to their informal knowledge or experiences;
  3. Use open-ended questions to prompt children to apply their math knowledge; and
  4. Encourage children to recognize and talk about math in everyday situations.
