How Principals Affect Students and Schools: A Systematic Synthesis of Two Decades of Research

This review of 219 research studies since 2000 finds that school principals may have a greater impact on students than previously estimated. Impacts are greater on student achievement and broader in affecting other important outcomes, including teacher satisfaction and retention, student attendance, and reductions in exclusionary discipline. Researchers identify four principal practices that are linked to effective outcomes, as well as three foundational skills.
