This practice guide summary and video are companion pieces to the Teaching Math to Young Children practice guide. The practice guide summary provides a brief overview of the five evidence-based recommendations included in the practice guide. The summary also provides examples of strategies teachers can use in the classroom that are aligned to these recommendations as well as the evidence that supports the recommendations.
In the video, Douglas Clemens, Ph.D., discusses visual specialization and explains recommendation 2 from the practice guide. He explains developmental progressions. Additionally, he provides actionable strategies for teachers to use with children to help them move through the progressions of geometry, patterns, measurement, and data analysis focusing on shapes and space.
