This document from the U.S. Department of Education describes the evidence requirement embedded in the Every Student Succeeds Act and provides non-regulatory guidance on its application. The document describes the statutory evidence definition and offers additional considerations for its interpretation based on previously established review criteria from the What Works Clearinghouse, under the Institute of Education Sciences. The resource also places the evidence requirement in the context of a continuous improvement process consisting of the identification of local needs, selection of relevant evidence-based interventions, planning for implementation, implementation, and examination/reflection. This resource is valuable to state education agency staff to inform the design of systems to implement the evidence requirement and support individuals at the local level to do so.
