Developed by the Regional Educational Laboratory Southeast, this facilitator’s guide accompanies the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) practice guide–Foundational Skills to Support Reading for Understanding in Kindergarten Through 3rd Grade–for use in professional learning communities (PLCs). The facilitator’s guide engages Grades K–3 teachers, literacy coaches, and principals in a five-step collaborative and cyclical process to build knowledge and instructional capacity to apply evidence-based practices appropriate for Grades K–3 students to acquire language and literacy skills. The PLC series consists of ten 75-minute sessions that incorporate both small-group and whole-group activities. To support facilitators, guidance in session preparation as well as organizational tools are provided. The IES companion documents are available at the following links:
