Heidi T. Goertzen, Ph.D., is a research associate at RMC Research Corporation and focuses her work on providing professional learning and technical assistance at state, district, and school levels. In her role at RMC Research, Dr. Goertzen serves as Region 7 Comprehensive Center project lead for two of Alabama’s priorities: Improving English Learner Achievement and Improving Student Excellence in Math projects. She also provides support to the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Southeast on the Alabama Improving English Learner Outcomes Research Partnership. Dr. Goertzen has practiced extensively at state and district levels to provide leadership and expertise related to building capacity of educators to effectively and equitably serve English learners and to improve English as a second language programs and practices.
Prior to her REL and Comprehensive Center work, Dr. Goertzen served as a Title III specialist at the state level and has served at the district level as director of federal programs, student assessment, and Title III. Dr. Goertzen started her work in education as a teacher of English to speakers of other languages in Texas, Indiana, and Alabama in Grades PK–8.
EDUCATION: Ph.D. in educational leadership from Auburn University; M.S.Ed. in English as a second language and literacy from Indiana University; B.A. in English from the University of Texas at Austin
